What
is IEI?
A
Southern-conceived, Southern-led and
Southern-located South-South-North partnership.
A small, independent,
international non-governmental public-purpose organization led by internationally
recognized energy experts, and with regional offices, staff and programmes in
Latin America and Asia. The Regional Energy Initiative (REI) office in Cape
Town (South Africa) is being closed. Nevertherless, the opening of new REIs
is being actively explored.
What
is IEI's Mission?
To build local capacity and analysis, and to
engage locally and globally, so as to promote
energy for sustainable development.
What
is IEI's strategy?
- Focusing
on developing countries
- disseminating
an approach to energy, in which the level and
quality of energy services is taken as the
measure of development, rather than the
magnitude of energy consumption and supply
- improving
energy services through end-use efficiency
measures and the increased use of
environmentally cleaner new and renewable
energy technologies
- ensuring
that market restructuring and/or
liberalization in the electricity and
petroleum industries focuses on measures that
expand the provision of public benefits
- addressing
policies, regulation, institutions, financing
and management issues to promote sustainable
energy practices
- initiating
and strengthening capability in energy
analysis, information, advocacy, and
implementation in developing countries
Mode
of working
- IEI’s
projects integrally involve Information,
Training, Analysis, Advocacy and Action (INTAAACT).
Researchers and analysts are committed to
making a difference in developing countries.
- IEI promotes international projects and programmes
which involve the collaboration and networking of analysts across Latin America,
Africa and Asia. Regional and country projects are also initiated from the
offices in São Paulo, Cape Town and Bangalore.

with other organizations to complete
innovation chain
IEI - Status
IEI was formally incorporated as a not-for-profit
organization with tax-exempt status in the USA in
September 1991, and started operations in
September 1992. It was founded by Prof Jose
Goldemberg (Brazil), Prof Amulya Reddy (India),
Prof Thomas Johansson (Sweden/UNDP) and Dr Bob
Williams (USA), after the publication of their
widely acclaimed book Energy for a Sustainable
World. The intent was to further develop analysis
around sustainable energy development and to
translate these ideas into practice.
It received
initial funding from US-based foundations, including the Rockefeller, John Merck,
Joyce-Mertz Gilmore and New Land Foundations. It also received grants from the
Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries (SAREC), NORAD
and DGIS (the Netherlands).
